Before the Bretton Woods system was abandoned in August of 1971 gold was a fringe asset owned by very few people and often in secret.  Soon after the Ford Administration made gold legal to hold on January 1 1975 gold peaked after experiencing a 4x rally. It took three years to recover those highs and had a 50% drawdown and then 4xed during 20% inflation in the 80's.
